What app do Koreans use to chat? How to pick one for real Korean friends
No single app covers every Korean person. Here is how to choose a place where people want to talk, whichever app you end up using.

‘What app do Koreans use to chat?’ is a fair question with a slippery answer. Koreans use many messaging and social apps, and the ones built for meeting people abroad are a different group again. What matters more than the name is what an app is designed for and how it treats the first month of a new friendship.
This page gives four questions you can ask of any app that promises Korean friends, then shows HelloTalk, Tandem and inko side by side on them. It closes with a few opening messages that work on any app.
A disclosure first. Nawever, a Seoul company, makes inko and wrote this guide. Where it describes HelloTalk and Tandem, it uses only their official sites and store pages as they stood on November 3, 2026.
Three ways to meet Korean people, side by side
Each row is one of the questions this guide keeps coming back to.
| Question | HelloTalk | Tandem | inko |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is it for? | Learning languages in a big community, with a feed, voice rooms and livestreams | Finding a partner to swap languages with, by text, voice and video | Friendship between people abroad who like Korea and Koreans |
| How many languages? | Over 260 | Over 300, among them 12 sign languages | 22 app languages, with Korea-centred conversations |
| Who lets you in? | Not described in the official pages we read | Every application is reviewed one at a time | Install and create an account; confirmed scam and impersonation accounts are banned for good |
| What helps when words run out? | Translation, correction and live captions in voice rooms | Sentence corrections, plus voice and video calls | Translate on a received message, shown in the same bubble, with your friend's local time above the chat |
| Is there group voice? | Voiceroom and Livestream | Parties | Voice Party, without swapping phone numbers |
| What does it show about location? | Nothing we could find in the official pages we read | Only a wider area on the friends map, never an exact place | |
HelloTalk and Tandem cells reflect hellotalk.com, tandem.net, the App Store and Google Play on November 3, 2026. Because features change, check their official sites before you decide.
What the English search bar tells us
Google's English suggestions on November 3, 2026 for ‘korean friends app’ included ‘download’, ‘for android’, ‘make’, ‘real’, ‘meet’ and ‘chat’. Notice the word ‘real’. People are not shopping for a feature; they want a Korean person who will answer and who is there for the same reason they are. Others type ‘what app do koreans use to chat’ or ‘app to talk to korean people’, which is the same wish in different words.
Searchers in the Philippines have an easy edge, since Seoul is one hour ahead of Manila. In North America a Seoul morning is your evening, so the other person's local time matters more than any feature list.
Opening lines that work on any app
Once you have an app, the first message decides a lot. A short hello that mentions one thing you share is easier to answer than a paragraph about yourself.
If someone asks to move the chat elsewhere before you have really talked, or asks you for money, stop replying and use the report and block tools.
- Name one Korean thing you enjoy, such as a dish, a drama or a place, and ask a question about it
- Say in one sentence what you hope to practise
- Mention your time zone so a slow reply is not mistaken for silence
- Keep the first message short; you can say more once they answer
Why this search is harder than it looks
Apps built for everyone put everyone in one room. You can meet wonderful people there, and you can also spend weeks sorting through profiles that were never going to match your interest in Korea. On top of that, some searches end in ‘for dating’, which shows how often friendship and romance get mixed up.
A good app for Korean friends narrows the crowd, makes talking easier than reading profiles, and tells you plainly what it will not allow.

Four questions for any app that promises Korean friends
Use these before installing anything, this app included.
Who is actually there?
Open communities hold every kind of learner. Ask whether people in the app joined to meet someone from Korea, and whether Koreans are there to meet people abroad.
Can you talk without a shared language?
Translation that appears in the same bubble saves copying text between apps, and a visible local time makes late replies easy to read.
What happens when something feels wrong?
Look for reporting and blocking inside the chat, and a public rule about scam and impersonation accounts.
Is it friendship or dating?
Read the guidelines. Some apps state outright that the public feed is not for finding romantic partners; others say little.
Where inko fits in this guide
inko was made in Seoul by Nawever for one purpose: to let people abroad who love Korea become friends with Koreans who want friends in other countries. It is a mobile app only, for iOS and Android, and its screens come in 22 languages.
Against the four questions, this is what is live today.

- Translation inside the bubble Choose Translate on a message you received and the translation appears in the same bubble, directly below the original. You can read the Korean and learn from it in one place.
- The other person's local time A clock above each chat shows what time it is for your friend, so a reply that arrives the next morning makes sense.
- Report, block, permanent bans Messages, profiles and posts can be reported, and people can be blocked. Accounts confirmed as scams or impersonation are banned permanently, and the friends map shows regions rather than exact places.
- Friendship, plus Voice Party inko is not a dating app: the community guidelines forbid recruiting romantic or dating partners in the public feed. When you want voices, Voice Party is a room where several people talk, and no one has to share a phone number.
Who it does not suit
inko is not the tool if you want to choose among hundreds of languages, if you want lessons or detailed correction as a study programme, or if you want to chat from a PC or a web browser. It is an iOS and Android app, nothing more for now.
Say hello to someone who loves Korea
inko is available on the App Store and Google Play. Search for inko, create an account, and start with the one question you are most curious about.
Which road to take
HelloTalk
You want a wide community, many languages and a feed to post to, and you are comfortable finding your own conversations.
Tandem
You want a regular partner, calls, and a review before people join.
inko
You want Korean friends as the main goal, with translation in the chat and public rules on scams and dating.
Frequently asked
What app do Koreans use to chat with people abroad?
There is no single answer. Koreans use a wide range of apps, and the ones made for meeting people abroad are a separate set. inko is built in Seoul for exactly this purpose.
How do I make Korean friends online without knowing Korean?
Choose an app that shows translation inside the conversation, keep your first message short, and ask about something Korean you enjoy. inko shows the translation of a message you received under the original once you choose Translate.
Is inko a dating app?
No. The community guidelines prohibit looking for romantic or dating partners in the public feed, and the app is built for friendship and cultural exchange.
Does inko work on a computer?
No. It is an iOS and Android app, with no web or PC version at the moment.
Can I try more than one app?
Yes. HelloTalk, Tandem and inko are separate services with their own accounts, so you can try them and keep the one where conversations feel natural.
How do I stay careful when I talk to someone new?
Keep early conversation inside the app, do not share personal details too quickly, and use report and block when something feels wrong. inko lets you report messages, profiles and posts, and accounts confirmed as scams or impersonation are banned permanently.
